KS3 Curriculum Guide - Year 9 Drama
Term 1Lizzie Borden - an introduction to GCSE   
Students will explore the true story of Lizzie Borden and devise their own piece based on an aspect of the story. They will be encouraged to use a variety of techniques as they would at GCSE.
Assessment: Students will be formatively assessed on their ability to work with others on a collaborative piece of drama.Key Words and Terms
Term 2Mask Work   
This unit focuses the students on the importance of the body in performance by teaching them about the forms and conventions of mask work. It will examine areas such as isolation, stage awareness, states of tension, archetypes and stage awareness and place students in a variety of contemporary settings to explore the dramatic power of mask work and its effect on the audience.
Assessment: Students will devise a short performance in groups using masked and unmasked characters.Key Words and Terms
Term 3Script Work (Stanislavski technique)   
Students will explore script writing and different interpretation of texts. They will be given a range of historical and contemporary scripts for group performance. They will also devise and create their own pieces using these prompts. Through this script work students will examine the legacy of Stanislavski’s acting technique.
Assessment: Students will perform a section of script from a 20th century playwright.Key Words and Terms
Term 4Shakespeare in Performance   
This scheme challenges and stretches Year 9 students’ understanding of Shakespeare’s language which can seem daunting. It helps students overcome the lack of confidence by experiencing Shakespeare’s language through a variety of means. Its main aim is to have fun and to experiment with ways of performing language.
Assessment: Students will perform the Witches opening scene from 'Macbeth'.Key Words and Terms
Term 5Symbolism and Abstract Performance   
Building on the physical theatre unit in Year 8, students will experiment with the physical elements of a drama performance exploring two different drama forms- symbolism and abstract performance.They will touch on the work of Antonin Artaud.
Assessment: Students will be assessed on their ability to devise from a stimulus. This will be in small groups and count as their end of year grade.Key Words and Terms
Term 6Devising and Design   
Students will explore design aspects of a production as well as having the opportunity to create a devised piece based on a stimulus in a GCSE style way.
Assessment: They will receive a final grade based on the work over the course of the final weeks. Key Words and Terms
