KS4 Curriculum Guide - Year 11 Music
Term 1Area of Study 3: Music for Stage and Screen: Star Wars  
Students will do an analysis of a set work and then compare and contrast the following: one set work - Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope by John Williams - with an unknown piece, focusing on the following: Diegetic Music, Underscore, Background Music, Cue, Fanfare, Dominant Pedal, Ostinato, Compound Interval, Ritardando, Neapolitan Chord, Flattened Supertonic, Quartal Harmony. Students will start work on the set brief composition.
Assessment: Short answer exam style questions and a Section B, 12 mark, essay question. Key Words and Terms
 
Term 2Area of Study 4: Fusion: Samba Em Preludium   
Students will compare and contrast: one studied set work - “Samba Em Preludio” by Esperanza Spalding, focusing on the following: Acoustic, Cover, Solo, Turnaround, Clave, Tempo Rubato, Melismatic, Monophonic, Counterpoint, Broken Chord. Students will also continue to work on the set brief composition.
Assessment: A series of short answer (Section A) and essay style questions (Section B) will be used for assessment. Key Words and Terms
 
Term 3Composition Coursework 
Students will complete melodic and rhythmic dictation exercises and will continue to work on the set brief composition.
Assessment: Students will continue to be assessed on set works using the exam format of short answer questions (Section A) and a 12 mark essay question (Section B). Performances will be recorded during this term and coursework will be reaching it's final stage. Key Words and Terms
 
Term 4Composition Coursework  
Students will complete melodic and rhythmic dictation exercises and will continue to work on the set brief composition.
Assessment: Students to have completed one free composition and set composition from a set brief. These need to be scored and a written commentary needs to be attached. Two compositions together should last 4 mins. Key Words and Terms
 
Term 5Exam Revision  
Students will prepare for the final written paper.
Assessment: Short answer exam style questions including melodic dictation and unfamiliar listening. Plus 12 mark essay question practice. Key Words and Terms
