Key Stage 3 Key Stage 4 Sixth Form

Term 1: RSE: Contraception, STIs and unplanned pregnancy

In this unit students will learn about sexual relationships including the Christian perspective. Students will also learn about contraception and STIs.

Contraception
A medicine or physical device used to prevent pregnancy.

Pregnancy
A 9 month period where a foetus grows from an embryo to a baby inside the mother's womb.

STI
Sexually transmitted infection.

Transmission
An infection/viruses mode of travel from one host to another.

Unplanned
Unintentional, by accident.

Term 3: Personal Finances

In this unit, students will learn about personal finances. They will explore mortgages and personal loans, taxes and how to manage a household budget.

This subject is not formally assessed.

Finance
Related to money.

Mortgage
A large sum of money borrowed from a lender to pay for a house or flat and paid back over many years (usually with interest). Money is paid back monthly.

Loan
An amount of money borrowed from a money lender e.g. bank and paid back with interest.

Budget
Setting money aside for each item that needs paying for, planning how money is spent.

Interest
An amount of money paid alongside the repayments of a loan - this is a charge for the loan and how banks make some of their money.

Tax
A compulsory contribution to the government taken from wages, company profits and added to certain products.

Term 4: Careers

In this unit, students will learn about the different careers options available to them and possible routes they could take towards their chosen job.

Apprenticeship
Training where part of your learning occurs in the workplace.

Career
An occupation or profession.

Work experience
A short-term experience of employment.

CV
A brief account of a person's education, qualifications, and previous occupations, typically sent with a job application.

Term 2: Equality

In this unit, students will explore what human rights are, what the Equality act of 2010 is and how it applies to discrimination, gender discrimination and the difficulties that refugee children face.

This subject is not formally assessed.

Equality
The state of being equal.

Equal opportunities
All people having the same chances in life.

Prejudice
Preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience.

Discrimination
The unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex.

Human Rights
A right which is believed to belong to every person.

Term 6: Key stage 5

In this unit, students will explore options for education post 16. They will think about what subjects they might want to study at college, what different qualifications are available and which college they might want to attend.

Compulsory

Leaving Age
The age at which it is legal to leave school or education.

Pathway
The career or education route/topic you choose.

A-Level
Advanced level study (normally aged 16-18).

Term 5: Mental health and well-being

In this unit, students will consider how to deal with the transition of KS4, how to maintain emotional well-being, develop resilience and recognise self-harm and eating disorders.

This subject is not formally assessed.

Healthy
Anything that contributes to good health or well being.

Lifestyle
The way someone chooses to live their life.

Balance
To offset one thing with another e.g. work/life balance.

Self Harm
Purposefully hurting yourself physically or emotionally

Eating disorder
Any of a range of psychological disorders characterized by abnormal or disturbed eating habits.
