Term 1: RSE: The Media and Relationships - Sexting, Sexuality and Pornography

In this unit students will explore the way in which relationships and sex are presented in the media. Students will consider the harmful effect the media can have on relationships including unrealistic portrayals of relationships, pornography and ‘sexting’. Students will also explore sexuality and presentations of sexuality in the media.

Media
The main means of mass communication (television, radio, and newspapers) regarded collectively.

Image
The general impression that a person, organisation, or product presents to the public.

Relationship
The way in which two or more people or groups regard and behave towards each other.

Portrayal
A description of someone or something in a particular way; a representation.

Pornography
Printed or visual material containing the explicit description or display of sexual organs or activity, intended to stimulate sexual excitement.

Sexting
Send (someone) sexually explicit photographs or messages via mobile phone.

Presentation
The way in which something is arranged, designed, etc.

Unrealistic
Not based on facts.

Sexuality
Capacity for sexual feelings. Sexual orientation or preference.

Self Esteem
How someone feels about themselves i.e. positively or negatively.

Term 2: Introduction to politics

In this unit students will learn about political voting in the UK. They will explore different methods of voting and the history of voting in this country. They will understand why voting is the cornerstone of democracy and how the political systems in the UK and USA differ.

Democracy
A system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.

First Past the Post
First Past the Post is the electoral system used to elect the UK parliament. Under First Past the Post voting takes place in constituencies that elect a single MP each. Voters put a cross on a ballot paper next to their favoured candidate and the candidat

Proportional Representation
An electoral system in which parties gain seats in proportion to the number of votes cast for them.

House of Commons
The House of Commons is the lower house of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Like the upper house, the House of Lords, it meets in the Palace of Westminster. The House is an elected body consisting of 650 members known as Members of Parliament (MPs).

Member of Parliament
A representative elected by a constituency to sit in the house of commons and represent them and their area.

Councillor
A person elected to sit on the local council.

House of Lords
The House of Lords is the second chamber of the UK Parliament. It works with the House of Commons to: make laws. check and challenge the actions of the government, and. provide a forum of independent expertise.

Peer
A Peer is a member of the House of Lords. Most members are Life Peers although 92 sit by virtue of hereditary title. Life Peers are appointed by the Queen on the advice of the Prime Minister to serve for their life; the title is not transferable.

Voting
Used to express a wish to follow a particular course of action.

Ballot
A system of voting secretly and in writing on a particular issue.

Term 3: Global Citizenship

In this unit students will explore some of the main global issues including water scarcity, poverty, hunger, climate change and differences in cultures . They will consider the causes and effects for each of these issues but also the actions that can be taken by various groups of people (children, adults and charities/organisations). Pupils will look at issues that affect some people such as FGM, honour based violence, trafficking and radicalisation.

Term 6: Body Image (some content taught in split gender classes)

In this unit students will explore issues around body image. They will explore aspects of a positive, healthy body image. Students will look at media presentation of body image and consider how this might impact negatively on young people.

The way we see ourselves phyically.

Media

Representation
The way something is shown to be (even if this is not the reality).

Dysmorphic
Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is an anxiety disorder that causes a person to have a distorted view of how they look and to spend a lot of time worrying about their appearance. For example, they may be convinced that a barely visible scar is a major flaw

Insecurity
Negative feelings about how others see you.

Manipulation
Twisting facts, information and images into something they are not.

Presentation
The way in which something is arranged, designed, etc

Term 4: Mental health

In this unit students will look at the issue of mental health including depression, self-harm, eating disorders and anixety. They will understand why people might go through these issues and how mental health can be positively maintained throughout teenage years to prevent this.

Self Harm
Purposefully hurting yourself physically or emotionally

Protective behaviour
Protective Behaviours (PB's) is a safety awareness and resilience building programme which helps children and adults to recognise any situation where they feel worried or unsafe, such as feeling stressed, bullied or threatened; and explores practical ways

Mental Health
The health and well-being of the brain.

Balance
A situation in which different elements are equal or in the correct proportions.

Risk
Expose (someone or something valued) to danger, harm, or loss.

Negligence
Failure to take proper care over something.

Emotion
Feeling.

Stability
Safety, security, being comfortable in a situation, feeling confident nothing bad will happen.

Nurture
Care for and protect (someone or something) while they are growing.

Productive
Produces results.

In this unit students will consider why their education is important, who is in their network, what roles there are in business, what skills and qualities they have, how they can develop a can do attitude and start to think about the career they might want in the future.
