Admissions Frequently asked questions

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Am I in your catchment area?

We do not have a traditional catchment area as some schools do. Instead, applications for 'faith' places and 'open' places are considered in relation to their proximity to two admissions 'nodes'. These nodes are the front door of the school in Hangleton (West Blatchington node), and the junction of Richardson Road and New Church Road (Hove node). Distances from these nodes are measured in metres and provided to the school by the Local Authority. You can see a map of these nodes in our admissions policy.

For both faith and open places, 30% of offers will be made to families from the West Blatchington node, and 70% of offers will be made to families from the Hove node. These families will be those living closest to their node. You may wish to view the data sheets linked below to see more detail on distances.

For students eligible for admission in under priorities 1-5 distance from the admissions nodes is not taken into account. Please note that if you believe your child is eligible for admission under one of these priorities you should note this on your application and submit supporting evidence as appropriate. If your child is not eligible for admission under priorities 1-5 they will be considered for an open place, and distances will be used to rank their application.

Can I see data on how places were offered last year?

My child was not offered a place at King's, but I want them to attend. What should I do?

We would always encourage families to accept a place at their allocated school, even if it was not your first preference. Turning down a place means you risk not having a school place for your child, and accepting a place at another school does not stop you from being added to our waiting list, or submitting an appeal.

If you think your child should have received a place at King’s but didn’t, you can appeal for a school place, all parents have the right of appeal if they wish to do so. The applications for this are through the Brighton and Hove City Council website. You can also add your child to the waiting list for a place. This is not automatic, you must request for your child to be added directly through the school. These requests can be emailed to admissions@kingsschoolhove.org.uk or can be taken over the phone 01273 840004.

How does the Year 7 waiting list work and how are places re-allocated?

If you listed King's as a preference but were not successful gaining a place through your Year 7 application you can join our waiting list. This is the way that most students join our school besides being offered a place through the Year 7 allocation process.

To join our waiting list, please email admissions@kingsschoolhove.org.uk and one of our team will add your child to the list. Please note- King's is not part of the reallocation pool, and to be included on the waiting list families must contact us directly.

The re‑allocation pool for places opens in April. At this stage, any places that have become available due to withdrawals will be offered to students on the waiting list. Re‑allocations are made according to the priority order set out in The King’s School Admissions Policy for 2025/26. This policy, along with policies from previous years, can be found on our website under the Admissions tab.

Once the re‑allocation pool is open, each time a child withdraws their offer of a place, we will offer it to the next eligible student on the waiting list. Unfortunately, we cannot predict how likely it is that a place will become available for any individual child; it simply depends on the number of withdrawals we receive.

Places are offered from the list as and when a student withdraws from the year group, and the waiting list follows the admission priorities outlined in our policy and on this page.

Your child will remain on our waiting list until either we can offer you a place, or until you no longer want to be on the list.

What if my child doesn't get a place through the waiting list before September?

Parents can choose to keep their child on the waiting list for an ‘In year’ Year 7 place in case of any ‘In year’ withdrawals.

Why did my friend's child get a place and we didn't when they live further away from the school?

Our Admissions Policy refers to two admissions nodes, and we allocate a percentage of places from each node on a 70:30 split (Hove node@ School node). This means you may live closer to one node but farther from the other when measuring the straight‑line distance from your home to each node. For full details, please refer to our Admissions Policy 2026–2027 – Year 7 available on our website.
